Have questions? Having Trouble? Maybe these answers will help.
Q. Do you recycle other products?
A: At this time we recycle only the products listed on the site. We are continuing to look for new avenues to address this growing need, possibly with larger collection events to gather items too large to ship and a pay to ship option for free recycling of items with no value. Please check back frequently for more information.
Q. I have multiple items to recycle. Can I send them all in one package?
A: At this time, MyBoneYard® is set-up to recycle one product per registration. So, you will need to register all products separately; for ease of recycling additional products the site will pre-populate some information in the registration process for you. Feel free to ship these items in together using one of the prepaid labels provided. Just remember that you will need to include the corresponding voucher with barcode inside your package for each item you are shipping. The label and voucher are provided at the end of your online registration through a link, and sent in your registration confirmation email.
Q. Will you take my monitor?
A: If your monitor is a flat panel monitor we are happy to take this item. However, CRT or tube monitors are very heavy to ship and have no resale opportunity, so we can not take CRT or tube monitors through this program. Please check with your local municipality to see what collection options exist for these sorts of electronics.
Q. I can't find desktop computers. Do you still take these?
A: At this time we are discontinuing the collection of CPU's or desktop computers. Desktop systems in general do not provide enough value to cover the shipping and recycling expenses we have incurred. We are investigating an ability to take back certain higher speed CPU's and Servers in the near future. Lower speed computers, however, will only be available through a pay to ship option. Please check back frequently for more information.
Q. What about my accessories - will you recycle them too?
A: When you are recycling a product through MyBoneYard® we encourage you to send in all the accessories with your product, however this is not required. Accessories can be defined as power cords, phone chargers, computer cables, batteries, operating software and instructions, etc...
Q. If I send you my stuff, can I ever get it back?
A: Once you send us your stuff, it enters our processing lines, and is not able to be returned to you. Therefore, it is important that you give up ownership when you send us your stuff, and that you are the rightful owner before giving up your stuff.
Q. If I recycle my stuff, who pays for the postage and freight?
A: MyBoneYard® pays for in-bound freight by providing a pre-paid shipping label that you print on your own printer. The label is made available to you at the end of your on-line product registration, provided in your initial confirmation email and provided in your Member Login area under the My Recycled Items tab.
Q. How do I find out what my stuff is worth?
A: Click here and you'll be able to determine if a reward value is available for your product. Just enter the make, model, and condition of your product, and you will be provided an estimated reward value. Once we receive your product at our recycling centers we will complete an independent visual inspection to determine the final reward value.
Q. If my specific product isn't listed in the drop-down menus, what do I do?
A: Send it in anyway by selecting Don't Know/Other from our drop down menus and we'll determine if a reward value is available for your product upon receipt. Remember, once you send in a product for recycling, it can not be retuned to you.
Q. How do I send you my stuff?
A: Simply package up your product using your own packaging, include the packing slip and attach the pre-paid shipping label to the outside. Larger items are shipped by UPS and should be taken to a registered UPS shipper. Smaller items like cell phones and music players are shipped via first class mail and can be dropped off at your nearest public mailbox. You are not required to include the original box, manuals, or other accessories with your recycled product, however, in some cases these items will help you get the full estimated value for your items. So, if you have them, we encourage you to send these in.
Q. Do I need to remove any batteries before I send?
A: You should keep batteries in the devices for safety during shipping, just make sure the devices are turned off. If you choose to ship outside of the devices, just make sure to tape over the batter connectors. We will make sure that all of the batteries we receive are reused or recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.
Q. What happens to any personal data found on my stuff?
A: We encourage you to clear the data off of your product prior to sending it to us. For phones you should remove your SIM cards. All products received go through a certified data removal process for the device provided. This process is audited on each device prior to leaving our facility.
• For phones, cameras, mp3's and the like, the data removal process includes a complete erasure of all numbers, contacts, data files, etc... and the item is restored to its original settings. Any SIM cards received are removed and destroyed.
• For computers, all hard drives are erased and completely rewritten, erased again and rewritten again, then erased one final time so that data retrieval is virtually impossible. The hard drives are inspected after erasure and if they fail to pass they are destroyed.
Q. Where does my stuff go?
A: This depends upon the condition and model of the product recycled. Where possible your products are remarketed and/or reused (according to the EPA this is the highest form of recycling). If your product is too old to be reused or if the product is damaged, we will reuse everything we can even to the base elements and then properly dispose of any remaining waste material in an environmentally responsible manner.
Q. Do you sell my stuff overseas?
A: We remarket fully functional products overseas to legitimate businesses. Frequently overseas markets are the best source of reuse for your previously owned consumer electronics.
Q. Do you ever donate my stuff?
A: Yes, we frequently donate products, but only through larger agencies and not on an individual basis. Some of our equipment is eligible to go to battered women's shelters, senior citizens homes, schools and 911 services. We also provide charitable options within MyBoneYard, where the value of your trade can be directed to a participating charitable group.
Q. Are you a certified recycler?
A: We partner with The Wireless Source, an ISO 14001:2009 certified recycler registered with NSF-ISR since 2007.
Q. Why don't you offer to send back my device if you verify a different reward value?
A: Our theory is you wouldn't send in your device if you wanted it back. Our goal is to reach a mutually acceptable reward value for your trade-in that you view as both fair and honest. Therefore, instead of complicating the process by asking ambiguous questions that can lead to varying results, we ask visually identifiable questions with simple Yes/No responses for condition. This makes it easy for you to properly identify the value yourself. Once received, we use the same visible criteria for determining a final value, and show our responses side by side with yours so there is no question how your product was verified. By taking possession upon receipt of your product we ensure better data security, clearing your data immediately upon receipt. In the unlikely event there is a discrepancy in the final verified value, our customer support will be happy to work with you to achieve an appropriate resolution.
